Copying RTW - A Summer Skort

Photo Link

I found a really fun RTW skort the other day, and I've been wearing it quite a bit in this horrible heat. I decided it would be terribly easy to copy, and I think it turned out well. The photo above is my copy in a coarsely-woven cotton print. Here is the original in denim.

This style reminds me of the kind of shorts they used to wear in 1940's musicals. I've always liked that style, and this was very easy to copy. Because of the apron across the front, there is not even a zipper in these. The original is closed with a button and loop at the apron edge, and a hook and eye at CF. I used a hook and eye at CF, but decided to do something a little different, and ended up with a tie and bone ring closure at the apron edge. I think it's kind of cute.

Here's the inside, and you can see the lack of a zipper. It does have sewn on placket extensions, but that's the only 'complication' in this design, and it's not exactly a problem.

I copied this by the needle tracing wheel method onto newsprint. This is a very simple method that works extremely well.

If you go to the Photo Link under any photo, it will take you to the gallery, and you can see much larger and more detailed versions of these photos. The pattern photo may be especially interesting.

Just to clarify... are there shorts underneath the skirt bit ? If so, is the short part attached to the skirt part. Also if so, what are the shorts made of?

I have a skort but am not sure of the definition. Mine is a skirty bit sewn to a pair of lycra shorts at the waist.

Jules, I'm sorry I wasn't clear. This garment is basically a pair of shorts, with the 'apron' piece attached at the right side seam and right front top edge. It reaches across the midline and so from the front, it looks like a wrap skirt. From the back, it looks like a pair of shorts. Sometimes there's a piece covering the back of the shorts as well. They can have vents on both sides instead of a wrap look, or other variations.

So, the shorts are made of the same fabric as the apron. In the photo, you're seeing the apron on the left side of the photo (my right) and the left leg of the shorts on the right side of the photo (my left.) Clear as mud? :)

I love skorts. I used to love just saying the word - skort. That was a long time ago, and then it seemed that no-one knew what that word meant anymore. Your version looks wonderful.

Looks like you nailed it! I've worn skorts. What is old is new again.

Thanks fro the explanation. Would be nice to see a back view. My skort is like a mini skirt with shorts under, so does not look like shorts from the back. I didn't realise that it was not typical.
