A Learning Experience

I've been poring over all the fashion magazines the last couple of weeks. Vogue, W, Harper's Bazaar. The spring runway shows are on now, but I've been ignoring them to keep my focus on fall. I've been planning out my sewing projects and attempting to be organized, and I'm not sure all this has done me much good if my latest project is anything to go by. Perhaps it's a lesson to stick to the plan and to the generally pretty basic styles that look best on me instead of lusting after the interesting and unique designs that come along.

Here's what happened. I fell in love with a skirt pattern in the September Burda WOF. It's #116, and there's nothing wrong with it except it looks awful on me.I kept trying it on and hoping it was going to look better when I got a little further along, and finally after I faced the top edge and the next step was the lining, which I luckily hadn't cut yet, I asked Pearle what he thought, and he immediately said it was just really bad in many ways, and especially because it made me look really wide, which he then very kindly said I'm not, so I felt a little better. He also hated the fabric, which I think is cute. Please note that the embroidery is nowhere near as shiny as it looks in the photo. It's much more matte with just a hint of sparkle. Anyway, that's the end of that one.

I really thought the style was cute. I've always liked those tapered skirts with interesting pleat details, but I guess they don't like me.

I love this skirt style also but found in a recent dress from the September issue that they do add some width to the lower part of the body :( I've chosen to take some advice from Summerset and just pile on the fun jewelry to draw the eye up.

I really like this pattern too, the line drawing at least, but I don't think it looks that good on the models, so it's not just you. I love that fabric though. Hopefully you can salvage it.

It's such a lovely skirt - the lines are really nice in the technical drawing - but it is a tough style to wear. It's too bad it didn't work for you but maybe you can rework the skirt or use the fabric to embellish something else.

Liana, that is bad luck! It looks really cute in the line drawings, but I imagine it would pouf out in front when you moved. Can you recut the front so it doesn't have the folds?

Liana, I'm sorry this didn't work for you. You choices are usually spot on. I love that pleat detail, too. I know it would do terrible things to me, but I keep looking at Cidell's jumper in that same issue (has the same pleat). Maybe the straps will bring the eye upward?

Oh, darn, don't you hate it when that happens? But I've noticed it does not happen much with you, you seem to make lovely choices for your figure! As everyone has said, perhaps you can salvage the fabric?

ah well, this is one of those times you wish you'd made a muslin. Hope the fabric wasn't too expensive. You could finish it and donate it I guess.

Hello! I just found your blog--it's wonderful! I too have had my eye on this Burda skirt pattern. I've not yet decide on "good" fabric for it yet. After hearing your view on it, I think I'll make a muslin first to test it. Sorry this did not work out for you...That fabric you chose for the skirt is scrumptious though! I look forward to coming here again to see/read more! Happy Day :o)

Liana, if it's any consolation, I think that skirt style would be very hard for anyone to wear - except models who are 6 feet tall and 105 pounds. You very seldom have this happen to you. Your clothes look really lovely on you.

Thank you all for your very kind commiseration. We all know that this will happen once in a while, but do we like it when it does? No, we do not!

Sugar, I would sell it. PM me at Stitcher's Guild or leave your email address and I'll delete it after I read it. http://artisanssquare.com/sg/index.php
